VENECIA
In 2001, Chita appeared in Argentine playwright Jorge Accame’s celebrated play, Venecia, adapted by Arthur Laurents, at the George Street Playhouse in New Brunswick, New Jersey. The play is set in the backyard of a small, broken-down brothel, run by Chita’s character, La Vieja. The ladies in her employ dream of better lives while La Vieja -- who once entertained men of great renown, but who is now elderly and blind -- is still waiting for a chance to visit Venice, the 'city built on water' that haunts her dreams.
Her devoted employees devise a hilarious plan to help La Vieja reach her impossible dream. They pretend to take her on a airplane trip to Venice, using props found around the yard. In a memorable coup de theatre, make-believe becomes magical reality when La Vieja is transformed into her younger self and dances one last dance with her long lost beau.
